American Psycho

A small review on the book: American Psycho

I guess I was in the mood for reading books-turned-into-movies, because after reading The Bourne Identity I started on American Psycho. Now this, my friends, is one sick book. And when I mean sick, I mean sick. There were actual passages, for instance the one where Patrick Bateman kills the dog, where I actually started feeling sick. The book is what the text on the back of the book promises though: A book about “a world we all recognize but do not wish to face. While reading this book, you realize that actually people like this can exist, that people like this probably do exist. Ellis describes, as if from first-hand experience, how one person can have multiple, very different sides. And the way in which this is done, by slowly but purposefully introducing the bad characteristics of the main character, is very good. Starting out with this regular Wall Street employee, bit by bit letting the reader find out about the cruel and evil ways in which he tortures and kills people and even animals. Nearing the end, you feel some hope for this person, but the open end leaves you with a very disconcerting feeling.

gravatar Filip de Waard: Nice review. After watching the movie, I’ve always wanted to read that book. Last december I got it, but now I have yet to find some time to read it :)

I guess I’ll start reading it next week, when I’ve finished my current book (I’m about to finish ‘The Shadow of the Wind’ by Carlos Ruiz Zafon).
